Can you host a wedding at a rental home in the GTA?
It is the question couples ask nervously, often after reading a horror story about a booking cancelled the week before the wedding. The honest answer has two parts — and knowing the difference protects your day.
The short answer
You can host the wedding week at a rental home: your registered party staying together, the getting-ready morning, family meals, and pre-wedding gatherings within the home's capacity. What you cannot host at a residential home is a full wedding event — an open-invite reception, a ticketed gathering, amplified music outdoors, or a crowd that exceeds the home's stated capacity. That belongs at a licensed venue.
This is not a Canterra-specific restriction. It is Ontario municipal bylaw, Fire Code occupancy, and the reality of residential neighbourhoods. Any operator who tells you otherwise is exposing you to a cancelled booking, a bylaw fine, or both.
What is welcome at a Canterra Stays home
- Your registered group staying the week — up to the home's stated capacity.
- The getting-ready morning — hair, makeup, first-look photos, the photographer working through the house.
- Shared meals and celebrations for your group — the family dinner, the mehndi within capacity, chai at dawn, the send-off brunch.
- Decorators, caterers and photographers — with advance notice and an agreed setup window.
What is not, and why
- Exceeding stated capacity — including daytime visitors. This is a Fire Code limit, not a preference.
- Open-invite or ticketed gatherings — these convert a home into an event venue, which requires different licensing entirely.
- Amplified outdoor music — not permitted at any time; it is the fastest route to a bylaw complaint.
- Anything after 10 PM that carries — quiet hours run 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
Breach is serious: it can end the stay without refund, and carries a charge of at least CA$500 plus any fines or costs arising. That sounds severe, and it is deliberately so — the alternative is neighbours complaining, the municipality acting, and the home becoming unavailable for the couples who book it next.
The move that protects you: ask in writing
Every grey area becomes a confirmed plan the moment it is in writing. If you are planning a mehndi for thirty, a vendor arriving at 6am, or a photographer using the backyard, tell us when you book. Approval in advance costs nothing and removes the single largest risk to your wedding week — the assumption that turns out to be wrong on the day.

What counts as an unauthorized party?
Any gathering beyond your registered group and the home's stated overnight capacity, any open-invite or ticketed event, and any gathering not approved in writing in advance. Breach can end the stay without refund and carries a charge of at least CA$500 plus any resulting costs.
Can we have a mehndi or sangeet at the house?
Gatherings for your registered group are welcome, within the home's capacity and quiet hours. If you are planning something larger or bringing in vendors, ask us in advance — written approval is what turns a grey area into a confirmed plan.
What are the quiet hours?
Quiet hours at Canterra Stays homes are 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, and amplified outdoor music is not permitted at any time. Municipal noise bylaw fines are the guest's responsibility.
Can decorators and caterers come to the home?
Yes, with advance notice. Canterra Stays works with wedding decorator and caterer partners, and outside vendors can be arranged — tell us the setup window when you book.
